Staff Bios

Elizabeth J. Allan, Ph.D., Co-Director -- Dr. Allan is a professor of Higher Education at the University of Maine. She is the author of two books and co-editor of a policy text. Her award-winning scholarship focuses on campus climates and has been featured in premiere education journals including the Harvard Educational Review and The Journal of Higher Education. Allan's professional experience educating about hazing spans two decades and includes research, prevention, student affairs, and policy work. She was the Principal Investigator for the National Study of Student Hazing (2008) and has authored and co-authored numerous articles, essays, book chapters, and encyclopedia entries on the topic of hazing. Dr. Allan earned a Ph.D. in Educational Policy and Leadership from The Ohio State University, an M.S. in Health Promotion and B.S. in Psychology from Springfield College.

Mary Madden, Ph.D., Co-Director -- Dr. Madden is an experienced researcher and program evaluator whose work has focused on the development, health, well-being, and education of adolescents, including hazing. She has co-authored curriculum to support facilitation of girls' groups as well as developed and facilitated trainings for adults working with girls. Dr. Madden directed the National Study of Student Hazing and has co-authored articles on hazing and presented the research findings at numerous conferences. Dr. Madden is an Associate Research Professor in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Maine where she teaches research courses. She also directs the University of Maine's ADVANCE initiative – an NSF funded institutional transformation project with the goal of increasing the number of women faculty in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and social behavioral sciences. Dr. Madden earned an interdisciplinary Ph.D. from the University of Maine in Education, Human Development and Women's Studies.

Kati Libby, M.B.A., Graduate Research Assistant -- Kati is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Global Policy at the University of Maine. Prior to coming to the University of Maine she received her M.B.A. from Bentley University in and her B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Southern Maine. She has experience in management, marketing and consulting. Kati gained interest in hazing prevention through her experiences as a student-athlete and Resident Director. She currently manages development activities for The Collaborative.

Phillip Tran, J.D., M.P.A., M.A., Doctoral Research Assistant -- Phillip is a second year doctoral student in higher education at the University of Maine with an interest in studying university administration. Prior to coming to Maine, he worked as a technical editor for an environmental consulting firm in California. As part of his research assistantship at the University of Maine, Phillip is assisting The Collaborative with survey analyses and report preparation. Phillip holds an MPA in Public Administration from San Diego State University, a JD in Law from Seattle University, a M.A. in Communication from San Diego State University, and a B.A. in Political Science from University of California, San Diego.

Cindy Tesch, M.A., Program Associate -- Cindy is currently working on completing her doctoral degree in Higher Education at the University of Maine and she chose the program at UMaine specifically to be involved with The Collaborative. She is interested in not only prevention but trying to better understand why people engage in hazing behaviors in the first place. Prior to coming to the University of Maine she was the Coordinator of Greek Life and Student Organizations at Arkansas Tech University. She received her M.A. in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her B.S. in Communication from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. She is also a current member of the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors and has previously served on the Awards Committee for the Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values.

Rebecca Davison, Program Associate -- Becky is the Graduate Assistant for the Alcohol and Drug Education Programs office at the University of Maine. Becky completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Maine, obtaining a BA in Psychology with a concentration in Social/Abnormal behaviors. As an undergraduate student she was President of the Panhellenic Council and was an active member of Chi Omega Fraternity. Becky's involvement on campus led her to pursue her Masters in Student Development in Higher Education at the University of Maine. Her past and current experiences made her involvement in The Collaborative a natural next step. While focusing on prevention and student involvement she views The Collaborative as a vital piece of the puzzle in helping to reduce and prevent hazing for students around the country.
