National study findings released

Dr. Elizabeth Allan and Dr. Mary Madden have just released the findings of their groundbreaking study on hazing across college campuses and student groups.

Ten initial findings are described in the report, Hazing in View: College Students at Risk and include:

  1. More than half of college students involved in clubs, teams, and organizations experience hazing.
  2. Nearly half (47%) of students have experienced hazing prior to coming to college.
  3. Alcohol consumption, humiliation, isolation, sleep- deprivation, and sex acts are hazing practices common across student groups.

Hazing experts take center stage on the opening day of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's convention, in Nashville, with a panel of academic leaders scheduled to discuss growing fears that college administrators could be held liable for hazing incidents.
